Broward Circuit judge Gary Farmer spoke too freely from the bench recently. He was reassigned this week to the civil court from the criminal division of the court after making several vulgar remarks in one day.
Farmer, a former Senate Democratic leader and former Senate Democratic Leader of Florida, shared three thoughts unworthy of a judge while ruling his courtroom in the last month.
The court confirmed on Thursday that Farmer’s remarks were the reason for the change, and ordered him to swap places with Judge Marina Garcia Wood who had been overseeing foreclosure cases until then.
Farmer recited a gay wordplay in an old comedy sketch, and almost dropped the f-bomb when reprimanding a defendant on Aug. 15.
Farmer, according to The Sentinel, told a suspect in grand theft auto who was expecting three children from different mothers, “You’re shooting everywhere.” I will order you to always wear a condom.
The man was then informed that he would be appointing a new lawyer for him from the Public Defender’s Office. He warned the suspect to “Don’t make her pregnant.”
He was later joking about Marlon wayans, the star of the 1990s comedy series “In Living Color”. Farmer cited a sketch in the show that featured a pair flamboyantly homosexual men discussing football.
He said, “Two snaps and a sweater.” He likes when the Oilers take on the Packers. He was a tight-end and is now a wide receiver.”
Farmer became impatient when it took so long to remove an aggressive defendant from court.
He said “What the f –,”?” before stopping to say the rest.
Farmer has been in trouble before for his comments.
Farmer was elected to the bench after six years of service in the Senate. He was elected Senate Democratic Leader in Nov 2020. However, he only served as the leader for five months. Lauren Book is now the Senate Democratic Leader.
He had been criticized two and a half year earlier for making “obnoxious comments” about Book. Book was said to be unsuitable for the position of leader because she has two small children.
Kevin Rader, a former Delray Beach Democratic Senator, slammed Farmer for his “sexist and outdated comments” regarding Book.
Farmer apologized later, explaining that “his comments were not meant to be taken as a general statement about gender or Senator Book.”
Farmer and Book were at odds again just a few weeks after Farmer was ousted. He implied that Book’s support of changes to Davie’s local gaming fees, which she represents was due to the fact that her father had been a long-time lobbyist for Davie.
Book, noting that Davie was in her district and Farmer’s criticism of her being Leader is due to “hurt feelings”, Book said.
