Judge Martin Colin is one example of many American judges who supervise conservatorships and guardianships. Because the victims are vulnerable and easy targets, they get away with it.

James Vassallo cannot stop blaming himself for bringing Elizabeth “Betsy” Savitt into the life of his elderly father.

Savitt, the wife of Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Martin Colin, serves as his guardian.

Vassallo didn’t know she was married to an attorney, but he chose her to protect him father after his sister and brother transferred $180,000 from the accounts of his father.

However, Savitt cares for his father and his sister Vassallo. He has been appointed trustee of his father’s estate. Vassallo says he is unable to get satisfactory answers from her regarding how the money was spent.

Vassallo learned then that Savitt had settled a $308,000 foreclosure against her home, while he managed his father’s finances.

Colin asked Judge David French, a close friend of Colin, about the matter in court. He abruptly ended hearing.

“If her husband was a judge, she would not have allowed me to go with her,” said Vassallo. She didn’t understand what I meant when I told her. Vassallo said that she can do what she wants because she has court support, and that is exactly the case now.

This is only a small part of the millions of dollars that have been stolen by criminals in black robes of shame, and lawyers who prey upon the elderly and defenseless.

This is how criminal judges get away with being dishonest. They hide under a rock and resign. They should be jailed, publicly punished and arrested. To instill fear, they used to stone them or hang them. They are now able to escape with large salaries and benefits, becoming lawyers or being hired in other counties.

This is just the tip of an iceberg. Guardians hire the most costly lawyers who have an intimate knowledge of every aspect of the law to represent them. This is at the expense of the ward.

The smell emanating from Probate courtsrooms across the country, especially in Florida’s largest and most wealthy counties, is overwhelming to anyone but the Judges overseeing the system and the predatory guardians and lawyers they protect from criminal prosecution.

Thanks to Fl. Thanks to Sen.Nancy Detert’s determination to make a difference and the passage of SB232, we are now moving towards administrative discipline for abuse. But we need to go further. Any guardian who takes as many as they can would be considered a criminal and could face prosecution. Existing laws make elder and ward abuse a crime.

The State’s Attorneys now have to answer why no predatory guardian or lawyer has been indicted. The Supreme Court must explain how they failed to provide Florida justice, protection, and trustworthy courts. The Chief Judges of Palm County must explain why they allowed this clearly wrong situation to continue for so many years.

Elizabeth Savitt (below), a professional guardian, is married to Judge Martin Colin. Many families have complained about double billing and sending cases to court to collect fees.
